OfficeBots: Reality Bytes reborn with Quantum Update

Here in the control room at FutureStateMachine, the Creative Director, Pranee McKinlay is pleased to announce the fully-featured launch of her innovative virtual reality game OfficeBots: Reality Bytes.

Thanks to Film Victoria funding announced in December last year, McKinlay was able to recruit a small team to expand the game, improve the player experience, and support more VR headsets. Today, the great work of that team has been unveiled.

That's right folks! You don't need your own special flux capacitor to regulate any anomalies in the new quantum update. We've used our own in-house quantum error-correction tool to do it for you!

Titled the Quantum update, this collection of improved and additional content includes:
  • New activities to engage in and objects to investigate and collect.
  • A greatly improved interface to make interacting with the world easier.
  • An overhauled dialogue system that adds to the richness of this virtual world.
  • Robot hands for the player so they can properly get in character.
  • Many other improvements, including Steam achievements, an enhanced world, improved player controls, and more.

This update is free for all existing owners of Officebots: Reality Bytes. First-time players can on-board by purchasing the expanded Quantum edition, either on Steam today or when comes to Viveport in two weeks. With this new update, it officially supports both the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift.

Subject: Memo from management: prepare for Oculus support and a pile of new content!

Greetings employees!

Those of you with Oculus Rift headsets will be very pleased to hear that the management subcommittee overseeing hardware assimilation has announced that Rift support will be coming... [checks clipboard] ...very soon.

This is just the first of two big updates coming up. The second one is a little more hush-hush, but I have been authorised by upper management to tell you it will be a major content update including… [checks clipboard] ...lots of stuff.

The complete list of features is still under wraps, but the word around the water cooler is that it will include big improvements to office workflow, new activities to engage in, and… [checks clipboard] ... Steam achievements. I’m not sure what that is. Something the young folks like, I think.

All of this was made possible by support from Film Victoria, and upper management have officially declared that Film Victoria are… [checks clipboard] ...awesome.

So there we have it. To stay up to date with our upcoming announcements, you should follow the official FutureStateMachine Twitter account. But, you know, on your lunch break, because you shouldn’t be using Twitter during work hours.

Okay, time to get back to work!

About the Game

You know the program: get a job, work, retire, then die. But what if you could short circuit the employment machine, interrupt the process, and escape?

You’re the new hire at a dreary office, recruited after your predecessor lost his head (literally). You’re expected to keep quiet, do your work, and be just another cog in a big machine, but instead you start chatting with your new colleagues. Each of them is a robot like you, disappointed by life and despairing of ever achieving their goals, resigned to spending the rest of their days stuck at a desk and staring at a screen.

However, if you can get to know your co-workers, learning about their dreams and their secret loves, you might be able to help them. In the course of bringing a little bit of happiness to a group of depressed robots, you may even discover a way to escape this dead end job and find a little happiness of your own.

OfficeBots: Reality Bytes [VR] is a little game with a big heart. Explore a wonderfully weird corporate office, listen to your robotic co-workers’ stories, and help to solve their problems. Ultimately your goal is to find a way to escape, but your journey to freedom will give you many opportunities to brighten up the lives of others.

  • A byte-sized VR adventure that can either be completed in one sitting or explored at length.
  • Optional quests and multiple solutions give you different paths to freedom.
  • Explore a charmingly odd virtual office and discover everybody’s hidden secrets.
  • Colourfully chunky robotic visuals paired with an emotionally resonant story.
  • A big collection of Steam achievements to reward exploration and experimentation.
  • VR exclusive title for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift designed to minimise motion sickness.
  • If all else fails, you can find some catharsis in just trashing the place.

OfficeBots: Reality Bytes was initially designed and programmed by an independent solo developer. Thanks to a marketing and release grant from Film Victoria, it has now being revised, enhanced, and expanded by the original creator with the help of a small team. By purchasing this, you are investing in the future of independent games.
